Climate Justice for Social Justice: Building Back Together

Minneapolis - May and June

Our base of operations has had an eventful and demanding early summer. While we traditionally respond to environmental disasters, our work in Minneapolis has focused on empowering our community in the wake of the tragic murder of George Floyd. Footprint Project has partnered with community organizations on three solar deployments to energize relief spaces, memorials, and displaced-persons encampments.

After the May 28th fires closed major grocery stores in the Longfellow neighborhood, Footprint Project deployed a portable solar generator to power a soundstage and donation hub located across the street from the 3rd Precinct Police Station. The portable solar generator provided a new neighborhood nonprofit, Voices From The Ashes, with an energy source to coordinate food distribution, shelter relief and justice efforts. In this deployment, Footprint Project provided power for 12 separate supplies and donation drives, each serving more than 100 people.

George Floyd Memorial Site

A little over a week later, on June 10th, 2020, Footprint Project partnered with community organizers to deploy a solar trailer to the George Floyd Memorial Site at 38th and Chicago Avenue (George Floyd Avenue). This solar trailer was used to power the medic tent, as well as a charging and lighting station to ensure that those participating in protests or events could stay connected. Up to 100 people per day used this trailer as a source of sustainable energy.

Powderhorn Park

UPDATED 7/20/20

After the Sheraton Sanctuary Hotel closed, many displaced individuals moved to Powderhorn Park. Footprint Project partnered with NECHAMA Jewish Response to Disaster, and deployed a solar tent to the Powderhorn Park Encampment Sanctuary. The encampment was composed of 400 individuals. Footprint Project's tent was being used as the Medic and Supplies Tent for the encampment.

Due to escalating insecurity, violence, and concerns for volunteer safety, Footprint Project has removed a solar trailer and solar tent from the Powderhorn Park Encampment Sanctuary. Footprint Project is discussing relocation of the equipment with community organizations, disaster agencies, and local government authorities.
